Stefan Jovanović Kaasa
is an artist and somatic traumatologist whose work bridges performance and therapy to explore trauma, myth, and transformation. Their practice spans dance-theatre, installation, drawing, and sculpture, often unfolding as immersive rituals that blur the boundaries between art and healing. In 2025, they launch Strange Fictions, a new performance company dedicated to crafting interdisciplinary works that reimagine collective belonging, queer futurity, and embodied repair.
Born in the former Yugoslavia and based in London, Stefan draws on personal and transgenerational histories of displacement and persecution to create emotionally resonant performance worlds. Their debut show Constellations premiered at Sadler’s Wells in 2019, followed by Drumming in the Hall of the Mountain (2022) co-commissioned by Sadler’s Wells and BIDF, which premiered at Derby Festé. Stefan’s work has been presented at Siobhan Davies Studios, Asylum Chapel, Stone Nest, Déda, DanceXchange, Dance4, FABRIC and Matt’s Gallery.
Trained as an architect (ARB, AA Dipl), Stefan is also a certified trauma therapist, integrating Somatic Experiencing®, Family Systemic Constellation Work, NeuroAffective Touch®, and Focusing-Oriented Therapy into both his therapeutic and artistic processes. Their solo performance When the Clarion Came to Call—premiering at The Cockpit in autumn 2025—marks the debut of Strange Fictions and deepens his exploration of live performance as a space for symbolic reckoning and sensory attunement.
Stefan has taught at institutions including Independent Dance, Royal College of Art, Goldsmiths, LCDS, UCA, Oxford Brookes, and is part of the teaching staff at the Architectural Association. They are a Sadler’s Wells Summer University alumnus and a two-time recipient of the DanceWEB Scholarship (2025 and 2016) and IdeasCity Fellowship (New Museum, 2016). Stefan has collaborated with artists including Katye Coe, Frank Bock, Eva Martinez, Stephanie McMann, Maëva Berthelot, Yen-Ching Lin, Shannon Stewart, Curtis Oland, Jonathan Burrows, Matteo Fargion, Pau Aran Gimeno, Maxwell Sterling, Kenichi Iwasa, Boris Charmatz and Tanztheater Wuppertal/Pina Bausch.
Through their hybrid practice, Stefan invites audiences into spaces of intimacy, transformation, and radical kinship.
